On July 13, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health, Human Services, Education passed its FY18 appropriations legislation. The bill eliminates funding for the Fulbright-Hays program at the Department of Education, which administers doctoral dissertation fellowships, group training and research projects, and seminars abroad for students and faculty studying the humanities, language, and area studies. The full House Appropriations Committee is scheduled to consider the legislation on July 19.
The legislation includes level funding for the Department of Education’s Title VI programs, which “offer domestic grants to institutions of higher education to develop and maintain capacity and performance in area/international studies and world languages.”
