Assessing and Maximizing the Impact of the Social Sciences: A British Perspective

“Universities are under increasing pressure from government to demonstrate that they make a difference,” says Sara B. Hobolt. She goes on to discuss what she calls the “impact agenda” that has permeated British higher education. Due to changes in funding guidelines, universities now are not only assessed for their research quality, but now also for the influence of their research on society. But what criteria can be used to measure the impact of research? Furthermore, how do these criteria affect public engagement and research agendas? Dr. Hobolt delves into the resulting Research Excellence Framework (REF) and shares the lessons that have been learned from the REF.
