APSA is pleased to congratulate the 2017 CQ Press Award for Teaching Innovation Award Recipient, Brooke Allen, Macomb Community College
CQ Press (an imprint of SAGE) sponsors this award to recognize a political scientist who has developed an effective new approach to teaching in political science. This award honors a wide range of new directions in teaching, such as the creation of an innovative course syllabus or using a new multimedia approach in the classroom. In addition to receiving a $500 award, the winner is acknowledged at the APSA 2017 Teaching and Learning Conference’s Opening Keynote Session.
Allen was recognized for a project, Gerrymandering as Art, that she developed to introduce first-year political science students to the intricacies of congressional redistricting.
I’m a strong believer in active learning. I try to introduce a project every semester to help my students think outside of the normal learning environment to discover the information in a fun and hands-on manner. I find this approach engages the students more fully and helps them understand complex issues.” – Professor Allen, (@PoliSciAllen )
