2016-2017 Salaries Report

The 2016-2017 APSA Departmental Survey: Salaries Report analyzes average faculty salaries and average salaries for newly hired faculty in the 2016-2017 academic year. This year’s report compares average salaries over time using constant 2016 dollars, and also includes additional faculty rank categories.

Average salary amounts and the degree to which they changed over time varied by the highest degree offered by the department, as well as by the type of institution in which the department is located. PhD-granting departments offered higher salaries for most faculty ranks, with lower rates offered by MA-granting and BA-granting political science departments. Average salaries at most private departments have increased at a faster pace overall than at public departments between 2013-2014 and 2016-2017. The overall trend in salaries is upward since aggregate salary data collection began for the 2013-2014 academic year.
